India’s non-farm rural economy is deeply rooted in handicrafts, making it the second-largest employment sector after agriculture. This industry is powered primarily by women, preserving the country’s rich traditions and cultural heritage. Among these dedicated artisans stands Dulu Moni Kalita, a social entrepreneur committed to uplifting rural women through sustainable handicrafts and digital empowerment.
A Journey Rooted in Tradition
Dulu’s entrepreneurial journey began in January 2015, when she successfully completed a Water Hyacinth Craft training program at NEDFi. Recognizing the uniqueness of this craft—being demand-driven, eco-friendly, biodegradable, and a strong competitor to fancy multinational products—she saw an opportunity to generate sustainable livelihoods for rural women.
Her commitment and innovation earned her multiple awards and recognitions, including the National Entrepreneurship Award 2018 from the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), Government of India. Over the years, she has undertaken several training programs through government agencies and NGOs, refining her expertise and expanding her outreach.
Creating Impact Through Community Development
Dulu’s contributions extend beyond crafting exquisite handicrafts. She has actively participated in NABARD’s SHG digitization program, EShakti, as an animator, providing handholding support to SHGs in the Pub Mangaldai Development Block. Working with NE-CARD, a renowned NGO in Darrang District, she played a key role in ensuring SHGs’ seamless transition into the digital economy.
Understanding the financial constraints of rural artisans, she secured a PMEGP loan to scale her business, empowering 30 SHG members by providing them with sustainable livelihoods. Her products gained popularity through expos, fairs, social media, and customers across India, reinforcing the demand for handcrafted, eco-friendly alternatives.
A Digital Empowerment Catalyst
Dulu’s entrepreneurial vision took a transformative leap in 2024 when she collaborated with the Digital Empowerment Foundation (DEF). With their support, she expanded her efforts to digitally empower rural women entrepreneurs. Through her digital business service center, she has trained and guided numerous women in:
- Using digital platforms for business growth.
- Product grading, packaging, and marketing.
- Onboarding handcrafted products on online marketplaces.
- Accessing certification and registration services.
Her dedicated efforts have directly impacted over 150 rural women entrepreneurs, facilitating their integration into various value chains. By providing end-to-end business support, she is fostering financial independence and economic resilience among rural women.
Scaling the Future of Rural Women Entrepreneurship
With DEF’s guidance, Dulu Moni Kalita’s SBM Center has become a hub of empowerment, offering services that include market linkages, certification, and business mentorship. Her unique initiative bridges the gap between rural artisans and sustainable income opportunities, ensuring that their traditional skills translate into viable livelihoods.
Her story is a testament to the power of entrepreneurship, skill development, and digital inclusion in shaping a brighter future for rural women in India. As she continues her mission, her work not only preserves India’s handicraft heritage but also transforms the lives of countless women seeking financial independence and recognition.
Dulu Moni Kalita’s journey is a beacon of inspiration, proving that with the right support and determination, rural women can become leaders of economic change.
